The Ayawaso Municipal Assembly has inaugurated a district youth parliament for the area, an initiative aimed at inculcating in the youth, values of democratic practice.

It will also help to instill and reinforce positive attitudes that will mould them to be agents of positive change.

The inauguration ceremony which was held at the Assembly office Friday, was under the theme ‘Peaceful Election, the role of the youth,” considering that the country is in an election year.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the assembly and the National Youth Authority.

According to the assembly, this project has come at a time where most of the youth have been unable to master public speaking, debates and more importantly skills of group dynamics in a multifaceted society woven into a democratic web.

Hence, the need for a special approach that is youth development oriented, thus, the conception and establishment of the youth parliament.

Speaking at the event, MCE for the area, Mrs Sandra Owusu-Ahinkorah established that the youth are the most endangered species from ignorance of their own constitutional rights and responsibilities thus invariably the future of countries including Ghana are equally endangered.

She said in recent times, most youth have been victims of radicalism and or instruments in most political process across the continent and the world.

Touching in the functions of the youth parliament, she said “the Youth Parliament as part of its function will carry out several activities including; educating the youth on the dangers of electoral violence and the need for peaceful elections. As young people, you must remember that posterity will never forgive you if you allow yourselves to be used as agents in plunging this country into chaos.”

She advised participants to embrace the values of discipline and self-respect to effectively collaborate with government to achieve sustainable life in future.
