John Boye in his prime was better than Rüdiger – Charles Taylor

Ex-Ghanaian footballer, Charles Taylor has opined that Black Stars defender John Boye was better than Antonio Rüdiger of Chelsea.

According to him, John Boye had all the qualifies of a centre-back: height, ball control, passing, intercepting and agility.

Speaking on Angel FM today, Charles Taylor who has played for Hearts and Kotoko asserted that the only reason Ghanaians do not place value on their players is they find those who ply their trade abroad superior.

He maintained that John Boye in his prime was a better defender than Antonio Rüdiger. Charles Taylor intimated that the only reason John Boye was seen as inferior was that he was chastised and brutally criticized for the least mistake.

“Ghana doesn’t encourage players unless they’re on top. One bad game and you’ve thrown away. To me, prime John Boye was better than Rüdiger but see how we always roasted John Boye for mistakes Rudiger makes too,” he said

Antonio Rüdiger is a German professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Premier League club Chelsea and the Germany national team. Rüdiger began his career at VfB Stuttgart, representing their reserves in 3. Liga and the first team in the Bundesliga.

Rüdiger is currently on the radar of Real Madrid following his impressive form after the coming of new head coach Thomas Tuchel.

Boye moved to Stade Rennais (Rennes) on 29 July 2008 after a two-week trial, he first arrived at Rennes on loan on 1 September 2008 from the Ghana Premier League club Heart of Lions with an option to buy and returned to Heart of Lions on 30 June 2009.

Boye had long been a target for Rennes, but an early attempt from Rennes to sign him in 2009 broke down when it was claimed that he had already signed a deal with the Israeli club, Hapoel Petach Tikva.

On 31 August 2021, Boye joined Al-Fayha on a one-year contract

On 17 June 2008, Boye was called up for Ghana, making his debut on 22 June 2008 against Gabon.  Boye was included in the Ghana national team’s 23-man squad for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in January 2012 and he made his tournament debut in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations match against Botswana on 24 January 2012.
