Road carnage: Focus your lenses on attitude of road users – Dep. Min. to Journos

The Volta Regional Deputy Minister, Rev Johnson Avuletey has called on journalists and media practitioners in the country to focus attention on the behaviour of motorists on Ghanaian roads in a bid to ensure discipline on our roads.

Addressing journalist at the launch of Media for Road Safety in Ho Tuesday, the Deputy Regional Minister said the escalating death tolls on our roads need a check that must include holding duty bearers; including the Police, National Road Safety Authority, the DVLA and all relevant stakeholders to play their roles effectively.

He appealed to the media to focus their attention on the aforementioned authorities and law enforcement agencies in their reportage in order to ensure a reduction in the rate of casualties on our roads.

The program which is being spearheaded the National Road Safety Authority is under the theme: Effective Road Safety Advocacy(Campaign); Role of the Media. It is a campaign meant for the media to give a comprehensive approach to issues regarding road safety.

Speaking at the same event, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Affail Monney, charged the participants to play a key role in minimizing casualties on our roads.

He noted that the involvement of the media in the campaign would yield positive results like the media campaign against galamsey.

He said, “Journalists must extend same campaign on our roads; name and shame people who drive recklessly, name and shame pedestrians and all reckless users of our roads.”

He urged further that the campaign must include a persistent reportage on all other factors that cause the loss of lives on Ghanaian roads.
