Volcano eruption in Congo forces thousands to flee
Considered the world’s most dangerous volcano, Mount Nyiragongo erupted on May 22nd sending many residents of Congo fleeing their homes in the middle of the night. Witnesses say the dark sky turned into a bright red sky warning the residents of what was to come. The scorching hot lava destroyed more than 500 homes, forcing thousands of residents to seek refuge at a nearborder in Rwanda.
According to online reports, at least nine people died during evacuation but it is unclear if anyone has died in the eruption itself; authorities predict the number may increase. In 2002 was the last time the ferocious volcano erupted, killing over 250 people and leaving over 100,000 people without a home.
