“We’ve not decided to increase lorry fares by 40% – Coalition of Private Transport Operators

Alhaji Ibrahim Abass Moro, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has revealed that the Coalition of Private Transport Operators favours lower fuel costs to higher lorry fees.

Only one coalition union, the Concerned Drivers Union, has agreed to raise lorry fees by 40% as a result of his agreement.

“This has not changed and we still want the taxes to be abolished and not increase lorry fees,” Alhaji Abass Moro said, adding that the coalition is still campaigning for the abolition of tariffs on petroleum goods. We have no idea why the Concerned Drivers Union wants to raise lorry fees or why they have chosen to make choices outside of the coalition.”

He revealed that the coalition will meet soon and that it will discuss the decision of the Concerned Drivers Union. “They did not consult with the coalition before making this decision, and we will not hold any briefings for them.” We’ll make a choice shortly after the meeting.”

Although the Concerned Drivers Union indicated that prices of replacement parts had increased as one of the numerous reasons for the increase, Alhaji Abass Moro claims the union behaved in bad faith.

The Concerned Drivers Association, which is not affiliated with the Coalition of Private Transport Operators, has announced a 40 percent increase in transportation fares, which will take effect on Monday, January 17, 2022.

The high cost of fuel, unit cost of cars, replacement parts, and lubricants were listed by the Association as factors for their decision. “Although we have made this unilateral choice, our brothers from other unions will agree that lorry charges must be increased,” their spokeswoman remarked.
